ART THEME: RUSSIAN FOLK ART
Students will used visual creativity to develop an understanding of the cultural norms of the Russian culture. The study of Russian art and architecture tells the story of their traditions and customs.
FIRST PROJECT: RUSSIAN ARCHITECTURE AND THE ONION DOME
It is unclear if the iconic Russian Onion Domes were originally constructed as symbols, or whether they came to be symbolic. The onion-domed tower may be a symbol of a burning candle or an actual onion with its roots and many layers symbolically representing life. The Onion Dome is prominent in Russian architecture. Students were challenged to create art using the onion as an inspiration to showcase the many layers of their own personal life.

Second Project: Russian Folk Tales were the inspiration for painting in the traditional Russian Folk Painting style. Black acrylic backgrounds required students to paint their interpretations of their chosen folk tale with tints. Tints are colors mixed with white; this assures color to stand out and contrast against the black background.
