ART THEME: THE MAYAN CULTURE
Students will used visual creativity to develop an understanding of the cultural norms this ancient society valued. The study of the art and expression tells the story of their traditions and customs.
FIRST PROJECT: The Maya hieroglyphic writing is very complex, with hundreds of unique signs or glyphs in the form of humans, animals, supernaturals, objects, and abstract designs. Students used many of the Mayan design elements of rounded corners, dots and fat lines to create their own glyphs representational of themselves and their personal interests. Warm and Cool colors give contrast and highlights their designs.

SECOND PROJECT: Mayan Sun Paintings: The Maya were deeply religious, and worshiped various gods related to nature, including the gods of the sun, the moon, rain and corn. Students had fun painting their suns giving them personalities!
